我在贵州期间，有两天时间游历各方。不幸的是天公不作美，天气因素影响到了我的构图，第一天的作品比起阴云密布的第二天作品明显更令人愉悦。

From the While i was in Guizhou, I had a couple of days to explore. Unfortunately I was not presented with excellent weather. The weather adds a bit of atmosphere to the images I this from the first day is much more cheerful then the images from the second, very overcast, day.

I had the privilege to photograph Li Xiaofeng in his Beijing studio. He also has a Dingdejing studio as well, which I missed him by days at when i was there in February. His work is reconstructing shards of rejected pottery into other forms, my notably dresses and coats. His work is collected world wide. For those in Beijing you might have seen two pieces at The Opposite House.

This is my pitch for working with business magazines. From walking into the room to finishing this set up was 10 minutes. The whole shoot was a relaxing 25 minutes including setting up a shot behind his desk and him taking a call.

Half day in a studio and half day at 751, four models and many, many pairs of shoes. This was my first fully fledged fashion shoot in China. Felt really good to get back in to the groove. I’ve done some odd jobs this year but this one is up there as the oddest. An acquaintance told me he had a shoot I could work with him on. I asked a few more questions, like what, when and how much. Shooting rubber in a small studio is not easy. It is much more suited to a large space with very big soft boxes. I made do. Most of the photographs were against a white background for their catalogue, however on the sixth suit, i shot the white then moved my navy blue background in and added a bit of drama. So if you are in the fetish manufacturing, I can say I’m experienced.

I’ve been working on an art project with my artistic partner Martin for more then two years. Tokyo was the last city to visited in the eight we decided on. The project is simple, document as many men as we can doing their morning ritual, in real time, with photography as authentically as we can. The project started in Melbourne, and we’ve added, the Sunshine Coast, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Shanghai and of course Beijing. If the guy said yes, we photograph, the only exception to that has been in Beijing where we have done quite a large number as I’m living here. Ewerthon Tobase and myself worked on an article for Status magazine in Brazil on the Tokyo fish markets. Where as most people get there early, we decided we would take another approach and get there towards the end of the day’s trading. this meant that we could get photographs like this lone prawn (shrimp). The magazine is out now. I’m working on my next blog for City weekend. This is going to echo some of the work I did art wise in the mid 1990s. I did two exhibitions where I photographed places that in one case had been taken over by tourists and lost their original meanings, the other was about a place where something significant had happened but was now lost in history. The story of Midnight in Peking by Paul French happens close to where I live. Pamela Werner’s body was found in the park I walk through to get to Red Gate Gallery, where i work. In fact the gallery’s building has a key role in the story. I am posting a photo of what was the ‘Badlands’ of 1930s Beijing. Today was the first snowfall of the year (not to be confused with Skyfall which is very different). David has been wanting to meet again for some time. We did some test shots together end of last year. He is not a model, nor has pretences to be one, i like that i can make him look very butch even threatening, in the photographs. For historical interest (and because it’s so small and totally different to this site) I’ve put it up as a record of the work I did in advertising and editorial in the 1990s and early 2000s. This exquisite work is on display October to December 2012. it is stunningly beautiful. It was a great joy to photograph it. Thanks to The World of Chinese for publishing my photo-essay on Qingdao Number One Bathing beach I photographed this time last year on the FLP trip. Thanks to Bobby Brill for the contact and being such a hoot during the 7 days we spent there. This comes with a small essay. Bought a set of flashes for the shoot. I made 6 set ups, used various lenses and had a very intense 2 hour shoot with a 2 hour edit and 3 hour touch up… My touching up skills just got a lot better, I put them through three programmes, and i think found a balance between the extreme of say a Clique advert where the skin looks plastic and sprayed on and reality. The scary thing for me is that i made them appear real while being quite torched up, in China we call it ‘looking one’s best’. Since arriving in Beijing I have been photographing the parks that give us some relief from the big city. To make it more interesting to myself i gave myself some rules. Each park is 90 minutes, with one camera and one lens, I can go back in another season and shoot it again. These sets are going up on City Weekend’s website as a blog.

I returned to Australia to attend and photograph my sisters wedding. I will not be making a habit of photographing weddings again. I did ten years of them. It is an event and a day to be captured. Though in this case I had to take on the directors role more. Gallery

Lv Peng was the first studio I photographed as part of a larger commission from Brian Wallace from Red Gate Gallery. Peng’s themes are have overlap with my concerns. In our conversation we talked about the 1900-30s are a defining moment of Chinese history, the sense of wonder and advancement. This mirrored society in this current period. His paintings have young men discovering the world and getting involved in it.
